Behavior changes

2 doses at 4-6 week interval initially, annual boosters

Vaccinate in early spring

Tetanus

Lock-jaw

Bacteria

Bacteria in soil enters wound or umbilicus Muscle spasms and  paralysis 2 doses at 4-6 week intervals, annual boosters Vaccinate bred mares 30 days prior to foaling

Strangles

Distemper Bacteria Contact with infected nasal secretions or contaminated objects/stalls Swollen lymph nodes, nasal discharge, fever 2-3 doses at 3 week intervals, annual booster Vaccinate bred mares 30 days prior to foaling

Rhinopneumonitis

Rhino Virus Contact with infected nasal secretions or contaminated objects/stalls Coughs and colds, abortions in bred mares 2 doses at 4-6 week interval, booster semi annually Vaccinate bred mares at 5, 7 and 9 month of pregnancy

Influenza

Flu Virus Contact with infected nasal secretions or contaminated objects/stalls Coughs and colds 2 doses at 3-4 week intervals, booster semi annually Most common in spring/ rainy season

Equine Infectious Anemia

Swamp Fever Virus Passed by infected blood/ Mosquito Recurring cycles of fever, weight loss, anemia, edema No vaccine available Infected horses carry virus for life. No treatment. diagnosis with Coggins test
